american hazelnut sapling (corylus americana) - native to eastern & central northern turtle island (north america), american hazel is a medium to large shrub, reaching heights of 16ft tall. it’s incredibly cold hardy, surviving temperatures down to -35C. they will tolerate shade but need full sun for ideal nut production. soil wise it’s quite tolerant but will thrive in well-draining soils. plants are monoecious (which means the male & female flowers grow on the same plant) but will produce better with 2-3 plants planted closely together for better pollination. it is resistant to the eastern filbert blight (which has devastated a lot of cultivar hazels). hazelnuts were an important protein rich food staple to the first nations people, and the wood was used for weaving and for arrows.
