balsam poplar (populus balsamifera) -a straight growing rounded-crown deciduous tree growing up to 70ft tall. the fragrant, resinous buds are used in herbal medicine to make salves/oils for sores, wounds, inflammation. very fast growing, useful for windbreaks. cannot handle shade. prefers well-drained soil but can tolerate clay.
