che fruit tree (maclura tricuspidata) - native to eastern asia, this is a very hardy & unique deciduous fruit tree. reaching heights of about 20ft tall, it is a smaller tree with sharp thorns. related to fig & mulberry, it bears a unusual fruit appearing like a bumpy mulberry & said to taste like a mix of fig, watermelong & canteloupe. thrives in full sun & can handle drought, sandy or alkaline soils. said to be extremely disease & pest resistant. seedlings are unsexed, and need a male/female plant for abundant crops. it will produce fruit on it’s own, just less reliably.
