cornelian cherry (cornus mas) is a small deciduous tree or shrub native to europe and parts of asia. it typically grows up to 25 feet tall, with beautiful yellow flowers in early spring before the leaves emerge. the tree produces oblong, bright red tart fruit that ripens in late summer and is edible, often used in jams, jellies, pies, syrups or juice. the leaves are glossy, oval-shaped, and turn a vibrant yellow in the fall, making them a lovely autumn garden addition. cornelian cherry is slow growing but can live over 150 years. they are also valued for its hard, durable wood and their use in traditional medicine.
