golden rain tree (Koelreuteria paniculata) - a striking & resilient decorative deciduous tree known for its abundant, paper lantern like seed pods that provide quite the show in late summer. native to eastern asia, they require at least 6 hours of daily direct sun, but are hardy enough to survive in xeriscape type settings or urban areas, and will tolerate any soil type (clay, sand, etc) except wet standing dampness. the yellow flowers were once harvested to create a yellow dye, and was considered a sacred memorial tree—-one of five planted to shade the tombs of high ranking government officials. is known to self-seed.
