haskaps (lonicera caerulea) is a very hardy berry plant native to northern boreal forests of europe & asia, as well as north america. they were named haskap by the native ainu people of hokkaido japan from the word ‘hasukappu’ which means ‘little present on the end of the branch’ . they are known to survive very cold, harsh conditions. in the honeysuckle family, haskaps are a tasty very early berry full of antioxidants. the shrubs grow steadily and bush out at about 6ft tall and similarly wide. the plants are hermaphrodite and pollinated by insects. the plants are hardy in most soils but prefer moist conditions and need full to part-sun. the berries look like long blueberries, and have been heralded as a superfood, used in juice, jams, jellies or enjoyed fresh by many. these plants are assorted varieties that we enjoy.
