carolina allspice (calycanthus floridus) - also known as spicebush. a small, fragrant understory shrub with deep red flowers (non-edible). native to south eastern turtle island (north america). round in shape, growing up to 9ft tall. shade & soil tolerant. wants to be sheltered from strong, cold winds. bark is used as a cinnamon substitute, once used in traditional medicine. hardiness zone - 5-10
