red oak (quercus rubra) - native to north eastern turtle island, the red oak is a fast growing deciduous tree that grows up to 80ft tall. the trees are tall and stately, with lovely lobed leaves and large-ish, round acorns. prefers dry or moist soils but is quite tolerant, growing in part shade or full sun. can tolerate strong winds. the nuts were a food staple for first nations people of this land, and was generally leeched (left stored in running water) to reduce the tannins/bitterness and then dried and ground into powder for thickening stews of baked into bread.
