sambucus canadensis 'scotia' - a cold-hardy, early ripening elderberry cultivar developed here in nova scotia. similar to native black elder, but known for it’s extra sweet berries. grows best in moist but not wet, well drained soil. prefers full sun or part shade. elderberries are used in jams, jellies, syrups & juice, and boast increasingly well-known immune system supportive health benefits, as well as being high in antioxidants and vitamin c. grows 6-10 feet tall typically, really taking off in their second year. elderberry have a bushing habit, and make excellent hedgerows. the elderflowers are also used in herbal medicine or wines and meads. the berries ripen in august typically.
