western sand cherry (prunus pumila var. besseyi) - similar to the eastern sand cherry, but originating from western turtle island (north american). the western sand cherry grows significantly taller than its sprawling eastern cousin, topping out around 6ft tall. it has a tendency to slowly sucker and spread. flowers in the spring. fruits are slightly bigger, around 15mm wide, and are also used for jams, jellies & jams.
