dioscorea batatas - native to the temperate hills & valleys of eastern asia, hardy yam is an ethereal, vining perennial plant with heart shaped, glossy leaves & edible & medicinal tubers. it prefers full sun to part shade, but prefers moist soil. the plant flowers in september, with lovely small, white cinnamon scented flowers, and grows small aerial tubers as well.
we have found it to over winter well enough here, but not to spread very much at all.
the tubers can be boiled, baked, mashed or added to soups & stews. the root has a lot of traditional medicinal uses in traditional chinese medicine, where it is known as shan yao.
